M, b. 7 March 1853, d. 2 December 1903
  • PARENTS*: He was the child of Margaret Zimmerman 19 Sep 1824 Stark Co OH - 20 Jun 1909 Murray, Clarke Co Iowa & Samuel Burd 23 Mar 1827 Perry Co PA - 28 July 1897 Murray, Clarke Co Iowa.
  • Census: He appeared on the census of 18 June 1880 at Madison, Clarke County, Iowa.
  • Census*: He appeared on the census of 1900 at Osceola, Clarke County, Iowa.
  • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the The Osceola Sentinel of Thursday, December 3, 1903
    TREASURER, C. H. Burd, Dies
Breathes his last in Colorado Springs, Colorado after a year of illness of T.B. of the throat.
Clarke County, Iowa people were greatly shocked Wednesday afternoon to hear that County Treasurer, C. H. Burd had died in Colorado Springs. A letter had come to his wife in Murray the day before from Dr. White, saying Mr. Burd was growing worse and that some of the family should be with him. Mrs. Burd came to Osceola at once, in order to catch a fast train, and started Tuesday night. She arrived at Colorado Springs Wednesday night.
The funeral will be held in Murray, but it is not possible yet to fix the time. Mr. Burd had been a prominent man in Clarke County political life for ten years. He was a successful business man and farmer, and owns one of the best improved farms in Clarke County.
He was born in Wayne County, Ohio, March 4, 1852. At the age of four years, his parents moved to Union County, Iowa, where he grew to manhood, making it his home until his removal to Clarke County twenty years ago. In 1890 he was elected a member of the board of supervisors, and served two terms, and in 1899 he was elected County Treasurer, and re-elected in 1901. His health began failing last year. He spent part of last winter in Arizona, and all this fall in Colorado, in the hope of benefiting his health, but it was of no avail.
He leaves one brother, W. D. Burd of Arkansas, his aged mother, wife and seven children, who are greatly grief stricken at Mr. Burd's untimely death.
The deceased was a man of ability in a business line, and he had been successful in all that he had undertaken. In his work for the county, he was conscientious in doing his duty and was held in high esteem as a man of probity, and worthy of trust. His death is a great shock to his friends.
The Osceola Sentinel of Thursday, December 10, 1903
LAID TO REST, FUNERAL OF COUNTY TREASURER, CHARLES H. BURD
The funeral services of Mr. Charles H. Burd were held at the Methodist Episcopal Church in Murray last Sunday at 2 PM. The deceased belonged to three orders. The three branches of the Masonic order, the I.O.O.F., and The Knights of Pythias, The Knight Templars, A. F. and A. M. and I.O.O.F., to the number of one hundred and fifty, marched to the farm residence a mile east of town and escorted the body to the church. The pall bearers were selected from Knight Templars ranks and were: A. P. Jenks, L. W. London, J. R. Sheely, J. W. Boden, Dr. Martin and J. R. Felger.
A large assembly of friends gathered, far too large for the seating capacity of the church. Rev. Sparks delivered a brief but impressive sermon from Mathew 14-24, and straight way Jesus answered, Be of good cheer, it is I, be not afraid. At the close, the I.O.O.F. held ritualistic service, after which the body was taken to the cemetery and laid to rest under the ritualistic service of Masonic Order. Extended mention of Mr. Burd's life was made in our last issue. Throughout his years of illness, he displayed a most wonderful nerve. He kept himself up until within two days of his death.
He began some months before his death, arranging all his business in the most convenient way for his family. Mr. Burd was a generous man to his family and close friends, an able business man. His love for out door life and hunting probably induced the disease which ended in his death. His last hunt was in the Wyoming mountains in the fall of 1901, when it is said, he caught a severe cold, which developed into consumption. Clarke County, Iowa loses a most exemplary citizen and his family a loyal and generous husband and father. In his death, he was brave in doing his duty throughout life and he met death bravely. His brother in Arkansas, the seven children, and his bereaved wife, and aged mother were in attendance at the funeral. on Thursday, 3 December 1903.
