In his early years he worked for the US Forest Service and later owned and operated Atterbury Ceramic Tile Company retiring in 1978. Mr. Atterbury enjoyed rockhounding, camping, fishing, hunting, playing cards, family gatherings and bowling. He was a past member of the Moose, Elks and Oddfellows and past president of the Roseburg Active 20/30 Club, the Gem & Mineral Club and the Dougco Sams. He is survived by his wife, Inez of Roseburg; his daughters, Joy Rowlett and Kay Ebling of Springfield, Oregon and Jacquie Camp of Tillamook, Oregon; a son, Robert Altvatter of Bakersfield, California; brothers, Keith Atterbury of Roseburg and Clinton Atterbury of Santa Maria, California; a sister, Maxine Landreth of Lincoln City, Oregon; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lowell, Elmo, and DeLos and a sister, Marjorie Doyle. Memorial services will be held Monday, January 27, 1997 at 11 a.m. in the First Christian Church in Roseburg. Officiating will be Pastor Bruce Russell. Private interment will be at Oak Creek Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Columbia Douglas Hospice, 738 W. Harvard, Roseburg, OR 97470. Arrangements are under the direction of Wilson's Chapel of the Roses.

Mr. Atterbury moved to Roseburg as a child where he attended grade and high schools. He was married to Verneita Pickens, who survives, on Dec. 2, 1932, in Roseburg. Mr. Atterbury moved to Medford, in 1936. He was with Standard Oil Col., for several years, and since 1944 had been a logging contractor in this area. He was active in the Conservation of Land & Timber and Modern Logging Methods. He was a past president of Southern Oregon Timber Industry Assoc., and was a member of the Hillah Temple, Ashland, the Medford Masonic Lodge, A.F. & M. No. 103, and the Medford Elks, Lodge No. 1168. Survivors beside his wife, includ 4 children, Mrs. Donald P. (Coleen) Schneider, San Pedro, Calif., Richard E. Atterbury, of Medford, Mrs. Wayne W. (Sharon) Christlieb, Orange County, Calif., Mrs. Robert R. (Mary Ellen) Plankenhorn, Medford, and 17 grandchildren, 4 brothers, Kenneth Atterbury, Kieth Atterbury, both of Roseburg, Delos Atterbury, Sutherlin, Clinton Atterbury, Los Angeles, Calif., 2 sisters, Mrs. Hollis (Marjorie) Doyle, Roseburg, Mrs. Merle (Maxine) Landreth, of Federal Way, Wash., one brother, Lowell, preceded him in death.
