  • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the Mr. A.V. Carte Pioneer Road-Builder, Dies
It is with a genuine sense of sadness that we pause to pay a word of tribute to the passing of a dear friend, Mr. A.V. Carte, pioneer roadbuilder in Missouri, and in recent years, almost a daily visitor with us. Mr. Carte was probably held in the warmest regard by those who, in addition to his immediate family, knew him best--the men with whom he rubbed shoulders during a life's career of highway construction, probably unequaled by any other construction supeintendent in the state's history. Since his retirement, he has been singularly active in a variety of kindnesses, to those in need, and in his leisure hours had become a vital part of the little circle of fine fellows who daily meet and greet--discuss the ball games, inquire about health and welfare, and meet again tomorrow to face and share again the heartaches and joys of another day. It has been said that to live respected and die regretted is the ultimate reward in the life of mortal man. Such was the ahievement in the life of Mr. Carte, and such is his just reward. Albert Vincent Carte was born July 9, 1882, in Charleston, W.Va., and departed this life at his home in Steelville November 27, 1959, at the age of 77 years, 4 months and 18 days. He was the son of Matthew C. Carte and Caroline Carte, nee Jarrett. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Juanita Carte, his daughter Mrs. Marylee Branxx, Steelville; five sons and another daughter; other relatives and a host of friends. Mr. Carte was in state at the Jonas Funeral Home Chapel where Masonic Rites were conducted Sunday evening by members of Lebanon Lodge No. 77, A.F. and A.M. Funeral services were conducted at the Steelville Presbyterian Church, at 2:00 p.m., Monday, November 30, 1959, the Rev. Raymond A. Schondelmeyer officiating. Interment Steelville Cemetery. Catherine Gilliam

F, b. between 1800 and 1810, d. 1849
  • Note*: She From Edna Sanders, Salem OR (1973)-Catherine's great granddaughter by her daughter, Lucy Jane Taylor. Uncle John Taylor died early in life here in Oregon. Catherine Gilliam Taylor and her husband Warren started to Oregon in 1849. He died in Nevada, and Catherine and her children came on with their wagon train over the same trail as the Donner party traveled, and had much the same experience as the Donners. They lost their possessions, stock, and household goods. They were stranded in the Sierras and a rescue party from Sacramento went to their rescue, taking along food. I understand the children were carried out on the backs of men. Catherine went to Hangtown, near Sacramento, which was later renamed Placerville. I understand she washed shirts for the miners for a living, charging $1 per shirt. I doubt if they had many washed and probably only their white dress shirts. After her death, one of her brothers put her children on a boat in San Francisco and sent them to
Portland, OR where they were met by Uncle Billy Shaw, Aunt Sarah Gilliam Shaw's husband. I'm not sure but I believe the children lived with the Shaw's until the girls were married. Sarah Shaw was an older sister of Catherine's.
  • Note: She PREVIOUS TO MARRIAGE: Her eldest son, Mitchell Porter Gilliam, was born before Catherine married Warren Taylor. His father is not known.
