Adam Brown

M, b. between 27 May 1817 and 27 May 1818, d. 2 January 1900
  • Biography*: He.
  • Biography: He Pioneer Bridgeport Families by John J. Brown (The following sketches of early pioneer families of the Bridgeport Community were written by Mr. Brown a native son of Polk Co. & a son of Adam Brown)
    Adam Brown Family
Adam Brown was born May 27, 1818 in Centre Co. Penn. He crossed the plains in 1844 in company with Colonel Cornelius Gilliam, driving a team and stock for Mr. Gilliam. He settled on a Donation Land Claim in what is now Bridgeport, Polk Co.
Mr. Brown married Sarah Nichols, who was born in Maryland (sic), Feb. 10, 1833 and had cross the plains to Oregon in 1844. Mrs. Brown was a neice of Colonel Gilliam, her mother being his sister, and she had come to OR in the same train as her husband. Ten children were born on the Donation Land Claim, seven attaining manhood & womanhood and all cast their first votes in Polk Co.
Regina, the oldest child, and Nancy Catherine, were both lost with diptheria, at the ages of 11 & 9 respectively. John J. now 75 years of age now lives in Yoncalla, OR. Elizabeth married Harvey Gage and now lives on part of her father's old Donation Land Claim. Josephine, the widow of J.C. Frink, lived in Falls City until her death Feb. 3, 1927. William Adam Brown died a few years ago in Dallas. Sarah Ann died many years ago as a child of 4 or 5 yrs. Eliza Ruth married James Murphy. They lived of part of the old Donation Land Claim where she died a few years ago. Christina married Joe Gage. They now live of part of the old place in the last house her father built. Henrietta, the youngest of the family, married J.E. Robertson. She lives in Salem.
The entire family was born on the home place. Adam Brown never sold any part of his half of the Donation Land Claim nor at any time, was any part of, it mortgaged by him to anyone. Both he and his wife died upon the DLC. They were among the first settlers, man & wife, in that vicinity and knew all the old timers, many of whome were Mrs. Brown's relatives. Many was the weary traveler who was rested and refreshed at that hospitable home. One of her grandsons now occupies the home where she lived so long.

  • Obituary*: An obituary appeared in the Obituary Notice
Adam Brown was born in Pennsylvania in 1817, came to Missouri in 1843 and on to Oregon the next year. He drove cattle across the plains for General Cornelius Gilliam. Lizzie Gilliam, now Mrs. Frank Collins, was then a young girl and knew Mr. Brown as her father's work hand. For fifty-five years she has lived near him here in Polk county and on last Thursday saw him laid away near the tomb of her father, who was killed during the Indian war forty-two [years] ago. He belonged to the Lutheran church in Pennsylvania, but for many years has been a member of the Methodist church here. In 1847 he married Sarah Nichols. She died November 23rd of last year and he followed on January 2, 1900. To them were born ten children, three of whom died more than 35 years ago, all the others being still alive. He was not a politician or an office seeker, prefering to remain uietly at home with his family. In Oregon he never lived elsewhere than on his original donation claim. None of it was ever mortgaged or sold and it is left to his seven children clear of debt. On Thursday last Rev. C.G. Harmon preached his funeral in the presence of a large assemblage at the old homestead and then they tenderly laid him to rest beside his companion for 52 years. They sleep in the old Dallas cemetery surround by many other pioneers.
